Swamp Road at Gum Swamp Creek Bridge south of Waycross will be closed to through traffic approximately six months, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced last week.
Closure of the span started Monday, July 13 and likely is expected to continue into December and possibly beyond. The work is part of a bridge replacement project that will affect local travel for residents in the southern part of Ware County.
The GDOT’s contractor, see BRIDGE, Page ?A Underground Excavating, Inc., of Patterson has prepared and will maintain a detour around the closure.
The signed detour route will utilize Gilmore Drive, Gilmore Street, Gibbs Lane, Gibbs Street, 8 Mile Post Road, Lottie Tatum Road, and Ed Tatum Road.
Signage will guide motorists, and access to residences in the area up to the work zone will be maintained.
For the safety of the public, unauthorized personnel and motorized vehicles are not permitted in the construction zone, GDOT said.
Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce speed while traveling through work zones. Before departing, it’s advised to get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions.

This $2.1 million project will replace the current weight restricted bridge working within existing right of way.
The project’s timetable could shorten with favorable weather, GDOT said.
