I wasn’t able to write a full report this week, but below is a shortened version of the fishing report.
River gauges as of Thursday, July 10:
• Doctortown on the Altamaha – 4.4 feet and falling
• Lumber City on the Ocmulgee – 1.3 feet and falling
• Clyo on the Savannah – 3.1 feet and falling
• Statenville on the Alapaha – 5.2 feet and falling
• Alapaha on the Alapaha – 3.4 feet and falling
• Waycross on the Satilla – 6.6 feet and falling
• Atkinson on the Satilla – 9.9 feet and falling
• Quitman on the Withlacoochee – 2.4 feet and falling
• Macclenny on the Saint Marys – 1.6 feet and rising
• Fargo on the Suwannee – 2.3 feet and falling
Rivers – Austin and Bryan Hill fished the lower Altamaha River and caught a big bag of bass (almost 22 pounds for five fish). Their two biggest bass weighed 8.03 lbs. and 6.01 lbs.
Jesse Hildebrand and David Bush went catfishing on the lower Satilla River and landed 37 blue cats weighing between 218 lbs. Most of the fish were caught in oxbows.
Stephen Porter launched at the Hwy. 158 boat ramp (Satilla River) recently and caught 30 fish (bluegill, shellcracker, crappie, redbreast, largemouth bass, and bowfin). He used a bluetruese Satilla Spin for the panfish, and a blood red Dura-Spin caught the bass and bowfin.
Lakes and Ponds – I fished a club tournament at a South Georgia lake and finished third. I won the big bass pot with a sixpounder. I also caught around 40 bass during the tournament.
Jim Jurney went to Banks Lake and fished for around 2 ½-hours. He managed to catch six big bluegill (all at least nine inches long), a big warmouth and a mudfish. Most of the fish ate crickets under a float.
Jimmy Zinker fished at a lake and caught a few bass up to 6-lbs., 2-oz.
Jim O’Conner caught 14 bass (several in the 3-4 lbs.) at a pond while using urchin style baits.
Saltwater (Ga. Coast) – Captain Greg Hildreth has been catching some nice sized trout on live shrimp. He also reported the whiting have been biting off the beach. Squid and shrimp have been the best two baits for the whiting.
