The Brantley County Board of Commissioners discussed/approved the following agenda items during the Tuesday, July 7 work session and the Thursday, July 9 regular meeting.
County Manager Joey Cason informed commissioners three amendments needed to be added to the Thursday agenda concerning an appointment to the Brantley County Development Authority (consent agenda), the annual payment that is owed to ACCG for insurance the conveyance of Satilla Plantation property to the Brantley County Development Authority.
All agenda items are discussed during the work session and passage during the regular meeting.
• Library Board reappointments: The board approved the reappointments of Hope Smith, Vicky Rehberg, Joan Sweat, Sissy Baxley, and Frank Bullard, on the recommendation of the library director, to the library board during the regular monthly meeting Thursday.
• Brantley County Development Authority Board appointment: Cason said the Development Authority Board requested of the appointment of Brent Justice to its board, which was approved.
• Animal Control Board appointments: Commissioners, on the recommendation of County Manager Joey Cason, tabled the consideration of one appointment to the Animal Control Board until complete applications are received for all positions during the Tuesday work session.
• Variance for property: The board approved the variance for 6968 Central Avenue for the purpose of a community snack bar during the regular meeting.
According to County Manager Joey Cason, the building is already in place and has been used as a snack bar in the past. He added the Planning Commission recommended the variance be approved.
• 2026 GTIB loan and grant award: Commissioners approved the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank (GTIB) loan and grant award for the airport in Lulaton totaling $600,000. The loan is $450,000 with the grant totaling $150,000.
The county manager said Becerra Engineering has projected the $450,000 loan would cover the cost to fund 10 T hangars.
“We are currently working with GDOT (Georgia Department of Transportation) Aviation on getting the funding for the second pad,” said Cason. “This should happen in the next 60 days.”
• New F-150 pickup for Sheriff’s Department: The board approved the request of Sheriff Len Davis to replace the Hwy.82 fire-damaged patrol vehicle with a total cost of $47,400 from Cordele Ford.
Funding is from the $47,400 insurance money received.
• Axson Purchasing agreement: Commissioners approved the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office request Thursday to upgrade tasers at a total cost of $228,453 over five years.
“This will be paid out of their current budget allotted for tasers,” explained Cason of the funding.
• Replacement A/C unit at HeadStart building: The board approved replacing an old seven-ton air conditioner at the Head Start building with a five-ton unit from Harper Heating and Air at a cost of $12,000 during Thursday’s meeting.
Funding will be from the Capital Improvement budget.
• Purchase multiple tools and equipment for Road Department: Commissioners approved the Road Department’s request to purchase a plasma cutter and welder, a 50-amp generator pump, and a pressure washer with warranties for $11,590 from Amp Power.
Funding will be from the Road Department’s operating budget.
• Construction of a new metal building at the Recreation Department: The board approved the request by the Brantley County Recreation Department to extend the maintenance building by 20 feet on each end at a cost of $9,768.28 from King’s Building - the original builder.
It will be funded from the SPLOST (Special Local Option Sales Tax) account.
• Purchase Scag mower for Road Department: Commissioners approved the purchase of a new Skidsteer Tiger Cat mower, 38-horsepower Kawasaki with a 61-inch deck, from Tate’s Lawn Products for $13,599.
Funding will come from the Road Department’s SPLOST account.
• Radios for Waynesville VFD: The board approved the purchase of 15 new portable radios with ancillary equipment for the Waynesville Volunteer Fire Department from Monroe Communications at $27,203.25.
The need is for conversion to the new Leonardo radio system, according to Cason.
The purchase will be funded from the WVFD budget.
• Turn-out gear for Waynesville VFD: Commissioners approved the $43,065 purchase of 10 new turnout gear for the Waynesville Volunteer Fire Department.
“That includes all the equipment that goes with the turnout gear,” said Cason.
The purchase will be funded from the WVFD budget.
• Electric stair chair for EMS: The board approved the purchase of an electric stair chair for EMS from Stryker at $10,872.35.
“This will protect patients and EMTs,” said Cason, “from getting injured when we’re moving a patient down some stairs.”
Funding will be from the EMS Capital Budget.
• Installation of electrical equipment in the new Recreation Department building: Commissioners approved the cost of $30,500 Arrowhead Electric & Systems LLC in Blackshear for the installation of electrical equipment in the new Brantley County Recreation Department building.
It will be funded from the SPLOST account.
• Central Avenue resurfacing project: The board approved Scruggs Company as the contractor for the Central Avenue resurfacing project for $979,585.74 starting at the Ware County/Brantley County line.
It will be funded through LRA (Local Road Assistance) state funds of $912,000, plus a county match (in-kind) of $67,585.74 with work done by the Road Department.
According to Cason, first section will cover four miles. The next section projected is four miles, and then the last section is the finishing of the road.
• Payment to ACCG: Commissioners approved Cason’s request for a payment of $31,145 from the annual budget to ACCG (Association County Commissioners of Georgia) for annual insurance.
• Satilla Plantation property to the Brantley County Development Authority: The board approved conveying property in Satilla Plantation to the Brantley County Development Authority.
“Everything the commissioners are talking about is money that’s already been budgeted towards these particular items,” Cason said to those in attendance during the Tuesday work session concerning spending. “Each department has it own budget. SPLOST is designated for projects and can only be used for the items listed and approved. The LRA fund is straight from Georgia Department of Transportation.”
