WAYCROSS — Mrs. Betty Hendrix Guy, 91, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at her home in Waycross surrounded by the love of her family after an extended illness.
Born in Ware County, Mrs. Guy was the daughter of the late George Washington Hendrix, Sr. and Harriet Ila Bell Hendrix. She was raised on her family's dairy farm, where she learned the values of hard work, faith, compassion, and devotion to family from an early age.
Her home was one of love, strong discipline, and generosity, often shared with grandparents, uncles, and extended family whose stories became treasured memories for generations.
At just six years old, Mrs. Guy experienced the heartbreaking loss of her father. Her mother courageously assumed the responsibility of raising the family, creating an enduring bond among her 13 children that remained strong throughout their lives.
Mrs. Guy began her career as a switchboard operator with Southern Bell. After the birth of her first child, she embraced her most cherished role as a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She lovingly cared not only for her own family, but also for her mother-in-law and fatherin- law until their passing.
An exceptionally talented seamstress, Mrs. Guy shared her gift with countless family members and friends who treasured her beautiful work. She was also a faithful member of Trinity Methodist Church.
Known for her humble spirit, unwavering Christian faith, kindness and generosity, Mrs. Guy touched the lives of everyone who knew her. Her gentle nature, quiet strength, and unconditional love left a lasting impression on her family, friends, and community. She will be remembered as a woman who faithfully served others, loved deeply, and lived her life with grace and compassion.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Guy was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Troy Penland Guy; her grandson, Shawn Walker; and her 12 siblings, making her the last surviving member of her family, Willie Mae Hendrix Shaw, Wonnie Lee Hendrix Griffin, Ethel Lois Hendrix Shepard, Ruth Emogene Hendrix Sweat, Sarah Ann Hendrix Lucas, George Washington Hendrix, Jr., Clyde Hendrix, Charles Hendrix, Harry Hendrix, Rev. Robert Hendrix, Harriet Phoebe Hendrix Platt and her twin sister, Carol Sue Hendrix Perez.
Mrs. Guy leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory, her daughters, Donna Guy Davis of Brunswick and Lisa Guy Barnes (Phillip) of Waycross; her sons, Buddy Guy (Liz) of Blackshear and Danny Palmer (Kathy) of Swainsboro; her beloved “adopted” daughter, Debbie Moore; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Dawsey, Sarah Jones, Kyle Palmer (Jessica), Kirk Palmer (Erin), Ryan Marsh (Thelma), Lauren Marsh, Chris Barnes (Tiffany) and Brittany Guy (Tony); 20 great grandchildren, Chelsea Pope (Jonathan), Cason Barnes, Kaitlyn Campbell, Madison Walker, Leland Nettles, Kali Patten, Paisley Walker, Anakin Barnes, Elisa Jones, Braxton Palmer, Lily Jones, Rhett Palmer, Jameson Joyner, Logan Hutson, Addie Hutson, Luke Jones, Braelyn Palmer, Elijah Hanifa, Layla Hanifa and Lucy Guy; and one cherished great-great grandchild, Bo Pope.
Though Mrs. Guy’s earthly journey has ended, her legacy of faith, love, selfless service, and devotion to family will continue to live on through the generations she so dearly loved.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 15 at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. The family will begin receiving friends at 10 a.m., at the funeral home.
