Florida, Georgia quilt guilds donate over 150 quilts

NAHUNTA — Outpourings of donations are still coming in to Brantley County supporting families who lost everything — their homes, their necessities and their personal belongings.

Donations have been received from the community, and even from individuals and organizations outside the state.

That charity has not stopped, even with the fire long extinguished. Just last week, the South Georgia Modern Quilt Guild donated just over 150 homemade quilts to the Brantley County Family Connections.

The Waycross-based group hosted a quilting drive and received the quilts from guilds across Florida, and even from Texas. The drive also received hand bags, over 20 tote bags, handmade jar openers, and a dozen stuffed animals as well.

“Quilters have the biggest hearts and generous natures,” said Sarah Squires, president of the SG Modern Quilt Guild. “A lot goes into making one quilt and most people who don’t quilt don’t understand the dozens to hundreds of hours spent piecing the quilt top, the hundreds of dollars of materials, even more time to quilt the three layers together, and finally the binding to finish it off.”

She said they (SG Modern Quilt Guild) were “floored with the outpouring of love and support, even from so far away.”

The guilds that donated included:

Southeast Georgia Quilter’s Guild, Kingsland

Camden County Quilt Guild, Kingsland

Withlacoochee Quilters Guild, Valdosta

Amelia Island Quilt Guild, Amelia Island (Fla.)

Coastal Quilters Guild, Jacksonville (Fla.)

St. Augustine Piecemakers, St Augustine (Fla.)

Pine Tree Quilters, Madison (Fla.)

Stitched in Schertz Quilt Shop, Schertz (Texas) “We hope these items bring some comfort and hope for a brighter future to those who need them,” Squires wrote in a post to the SGA Guild’s Facebook group.

“Thank you so very much for everyone who helped me make this happen!”

In that same post, Squires stated the Director of Family Services will work with liasons to distribute the goods to fire victims.

The South Georgia Modern Quilt Guild will hold it’s next monthly meeting Thursday, July 16 at the Okefenokee Heritage Center in Waycross starting at 6 p.m.
