Author, artist, and Confederate historian Gregory Newson will speak at the Okefenokee Heritage Center next week and have his work on display throughout July.
The native of Harlem speaks at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 7 at OHC, 1460 N.
Augusta Avenue.
Newson’s art depicting scenes from the Civil War will be displayed in the main OHC gallery in a special America 250 presentation, entitled “The Bitter Sweet Truth”, throughout July.
His oil and acrylic paintings explore the lives of black southerners, black confederate soldiers, and enslaved people.
‘“The Bitter Sweet Truth’ exhibition brings together years of artistic achievement, historical inquiry, and personal dedication into a single compelling presentation,” said OHC Art Director Bob Brown. “Community members are invited to explore the artwork, engage with the stories, and draw their own conclusions about the many layers of America's history.”
Affectionately known as “Uncle Gregory,” Newson is a regular figure at historical and Civil War re-enactment events throughout the country, where he displays and sells his artwork.
Newson’s early life included participation in the Black Panther Party during the 1970s and overcoming personal struggles with addiction.
He relocated to the souther part of the country and began exploring and documenting the untold perspectives of the region, eventually making him a prominent, unique, and provocative figure in historical education.
Newson currently lives in North Conway, S.C.
“I am a painter and a historian focused mainly on African American history and the overlooked stories of black Southerners connected to the Confederacy,” Newson writes on his Facebook page. “As America approaches its 250th anniversary, I believe it is the right time to share these untold stories — stories that complicate, challenge, and deepen our understanding of the past.”
