County vote mirrors state’s runoff results

Ware County voters backed winners in all but two of the races on the ballot for last week’s General Primary runoffs, according to unofficial vote totals from the Ware County Board of Elections and Registration.

Rick Jackson and Richard Woods were the statewide winners who failed to carry Ware in the runoff Tuesday, June 16. Each of the other nine candidates on the ballot who won a party nomination for the November 3 General Election had winning support locally from the 3,063 residents who cast a ballot in the eliminations.

The board of elections certified the vote, shortly after the close of voting June 16, said Carlos Nelson, Ware Supervisor of Elections.

Jackson, who won the Republican nomination for Governor, lost to Burt Jones by a 1,647-877 tally, among Ware voters. Jackson, a businessman making his first foray into politics, won statewide 373,415-335,858 over the sitting Lt. Governor.

Woods fell to Fred ‘Bubba” Longgrear 1,2811,176 in the race for State School Superintendent. The incumbent won statewide 344,835324,896.

In addition to Jackson and Woods, winners on the GOP ballot were Mike Collins for U.S. Senate, Greg Dolezal for Lt. Governor, Tim Fleming for Secretary of State, and Josh Tolbert for Dist. 5 on the State Public Service District.

Those vote results were: Collins 1,985, Derek Dooley 522; Dolezal 1,386, John F. Kennedy 1,111; Tim Fleming 1,407, Vernon Jones 1,018; and Tolbert 1,453, Bobby Mehan 845.

Winners on the Democrat ballot statewide and in Ware were Josh McLaurin for Lt. Governor, Penny Brown Reynolds for Secretary of State, Keisha Sean Waits for Commissioner of Insurance, Nikki Porcher for Commissioner of Labor, and Joyce Marie Riggs for District 1 U.S. House of Representatives.

Their vote was: McLaurin 260, Nabilah Parkes 252; Reynolds 353, Dana Barrett 158; Waites 361, DeAndre Mathis 151; Porcher 303, Michelle Michi Sanchez 205; and Griggs 303, Amanda Hollowell 214.

There were 1,134 votes during Ware’s early period for the runoff while another 131 were by absentee ballot. A total of 1,798 votes were cast runoff day, board of data showed.

The 3,063 total represents 14.78 percent of Ware’s 20,743 registered voters. There were 5,253 votes recorded (25.4 percent) for last month’s primary.
