John Davis, Exchange Club member and volunteer with The Gideons, delivered an informative and heartfelt presentation during a recent weekly luncheon, explaining the global ministry behind the small Bibles many people first encounter in hotel rooms.
Davis emphasized The Gideons are far more than a Bible-placement organization. Founded in the late 19th Century as an association of Christian business and professional men — now supported by women through the Auxiliary — the group is dedicated to sharing Scripture and personal testimony to “reach people for Christ.”
He explained while hotel Bibles are their most recognizable work, Gideons also distribute Scriptures in hospitals, nursing homes, schools (where permitted), military bases and correctional facilities.
These placements, he said, are intentional efforts to make God’s Word available at moments when people may be searching for comfort, direction, or hope.
Davis highlighted the power of a physical Bible, noting it requires no battery, no internet, and offers a quiet, steady presence — especially meaningful for those facing illness, loneliness, or crisis.
He also underscored the importance of volunteers who fund, distribute and personally share the Gospel, calling their work “simple, faithful acts that God can use in extraordinary ways.”
He acknowledged challenges such as increasing secularism, digital media trends and logistical hurdles, but affirmed The Gideons remain committed to their mission worldwide.
Davis closed by reminding members the ministry’s impact is often unseen but profound.
“A Bible placed in the right moment can change a life,” Davis said.
