BOE approves resolution appointing Gibson to immediately fill empty seat

NAHUNTA — The Brantley County Board of Education adopted a resolution to fill the unexpired seat of Cliff Adams during a called meeting Friday, June 19.

Teri Gibson, who won the Post 4 seat in the Tuesday, June 16 runoff election over Richard Gill, joined the board Friday, five months early, following the approval of the resolution.

The seat had been unfilled for nearly seven months following Adams’ November 21, 2025 resignation when he moved out of the county. His fouryear term was to have expired December 31, 2026.

Gibson garnered 1,178 votes (52.57 percent) to outdistance Gill’s 1,063 (47.43%) votes. There were 2,241 ballots cast during the five-day early voting period for the runoff and Tuesday’s election.

Justin Bowers captured the Brantley County Commission Post 4 seat, being vacated by long-time Commissioner Brian Hendrix, in a runoff against former Commissioner Ray Griffin. Bowers received 70.67% (1,506) of the 2,131 ballots to Griffin’s 29.33% (625).

In the Republican Governor’s race, Brantley Countians supported Burt Jones (59.66%) over Rick Jackson (40.34%). However, Jackson captured the state-wide runoff 53%-47% and will face Democrat Keisha Bottoms in the November election.

Republican Greg Dolezal will represent the party for Lt. Governor after beating John F. Kennedy 54%-46%. Kennedy received 56.31% of the local votes with Dolezal capturing 43.69%.

He will face Democrat Josh McLaurin (55%), who beat Nabilah Parkes (45%) for the seat. McLaurin carried Brantley County (52.86%) over Parkes (47.14%).

Mike Collins beat Derek Dooly locally and across the state in the Republican runoff for U.S. Senate and will face incumbent Democrat Jon Ossoff. Collins captured 73.84% of the votes in Brantley County and 56% state-wide with Dooley garnering 26.15% of the local votes and 44% across the state.

Republican Tim Fleming won locally (55.24%-44.76%) and state-wide (65%-35%) over Vernon Jones for Secretary of State. He will face Democrat nominee Penny Brown Reynolds (63%), who beat Dana Barrett (37%). Barrett carried Brantley County, 54.93% to 45.07%.

Incumbent Republican State School Superintendent Richard Woods (51%) held off the challenge of Fred Longgrear (49%) and will face Democrat Lydia Powell. Longgrear won locally, 59.83%40.17%.
