Born July 29, 1936, in Cordele, Ga., Dawson lived a life defined by service, dedication, kindness, and a deep love for his family and community.
Dawson was one of three children born to William C. Dawson and Mary Ellis Lewis Dawson. He grew up with strong values of hard work, integrity, and helping others — qualities that remained with him throughout his life.
In 1955, Dawson proudly enlisted in the United States Army. Following his service in the Army, he continued serving his country in the United States Air Force, where he remained until the early 1970s. His military service reflected his commitment to duty and his love for his nation.
After his military career, Dawson built a successful career with Scapa Inc. in Waycross, where he worked faithfully until his retirement. He was respected by his co-workers for his work ethic, reliability, and willingness to lend a helping hand.
Dawson was a devoted husband, sharing 69 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life Mattie Louise Redding Dawson. Together they built a family grounded in love, faith and support.
He is survived by his beloved spouse; his children, Sandra Sumner, Marie Stewart, Troy Stewart and Eddie Dawson (Angie Dawson); along with nine grandchildren, multiple great-grandchildren, extended family members, and friends who will cherish his memory.
A loving father and family man, Dawson found great joy in the outdoors. He enjoyed woodworking and took immense pride in creating things with his hands. Whether building, repairing, or crafting something special, Dawson approached every project with skill and patience.
More importantly, he was always ready to help anyone in need, never hesitating to share his time, talents, or wisdom.
Dawson was also deeply involved in his community. He proudly served as an Auxiliary Deputy Sheriff for Brantley County and was known by many for his willingness to serve others. His kindness, generosity, and dedication to helping those around him left a lasting impact on countless lives.
Dawson will be remembered for his strength, humility, unwavering love for his family, and servant’s heart. His legacy lives on through the many people he touched throughout his life.
Though he will be greatly missed, his family takes comfort in the memories they shared and the example he set. His life was one well lived, and his influence will continue to be felt for generations to come.
