More than 200 descendants gather at first family reunion
FOLKSTON — More than 200 descendants of Peter Merchant recently gathered here for the first Merchant Family Reunion.
The historic celebration honored the life, perseverance, and legacy of a man who rose from enslavement to become a respected landowner in Ware County. Merchant, who lived in Ware County following emancipation, exemplified determination and resilience during a challenging period in American history.
Through hard work and unwavering faith, he acquired more than 400 acres of land, in another county, all while being a citizen of Ware County, creating a lasting foundation for future generations of the Merchant family.
Descendants traveled from near and far to reconnect, share memories, and pay tribute to the ancestor whose legacy continues to inspire generations more than a century later.
The reunion marked a significant milestone in preserving the family’s rich history and ensuring the story of the family’s patriarch will be remembered for years to come.
A highlight of the event was a powerful presentation by Carolyn Deloach of the Charlton County Historical Society. Deloach provided attendees with valuable historical insight into Merchant’s life after slavery, detailing his accomplishments, contributions, and and enduring impact on the region.

Rose Bailey also captivated the audience with heartfelt storytelling, sharing historical accounts and family traditions that brought the Merchant family legacy to life. Her presentation offered a moving reminder of the strength, sacrifices, and perseverance of those who came before.
The reunion served as more than a family gathering, but rather a celebration of heritage, unity, and remembrance. Descendants reflected on the sacrifices Merchant made to secure opportunities for future generations and expressed pride in carrying forward the Merchant name.
Many attendees described the occasion as “reigniting the flame” of the Merchant family legacy.
The event not only honored the past, but also strengthened family bonds and inspired younger generations to learn, preserve, and share their history.
Attendees said the success of the inaugural event would ensure that Merchant’s remarkable journey from enslavement to respected landowner and community legacy will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.
