Upgrades are coming to courthouse intersection

Upgrades are coming to courthouse intersection
The Georgia Department of Transportation will add a turn lane off Georgia Hwy. 15/121 South onto U.S. Hwy. 84 West and extend the turn lane off U.S. Hwy 84 East onto Georgia Hwy. 15/121 South.

Improvements are on the way for the courthouse intersection.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced plans for several improvements to the U.S. Highway 84/Georgia Highway 15/121 intersection in the heart of Blackshear.

The cost of the improvements is estimated at $1.17 million. While the project is in its “very preliminary stages” plans call for bids to be let in mid-2027, according to Jill Nagel of the GDOT.

Plans call for the addition of a southbound right turn lane at the intersection of U.S. Highway 84 and Georgia Highway 15/121 (Gordon Street).

The project will also extend the turn lane west of the intersection along U.S. Highway 84 from West Taylor Street (in front of Burger King) to the intersection with Georgia Highway 15/121 (Gordon Street and Main Street).

Traffic signals at the intersection will also be upgraded. All new traffic signal with flashing yellow arrows will be installed. The signal heads will be on mast arm poles instead of hanging from cable wires.

The project will include one tenth of a mile of roadway on both routes.

Construction is expected to take about one year. A public notice on the project is included in this week’s edition of The Times.
