Run-off election June 16, Early voting ends Friday

Pierce County voters and voters across the state have the opportunity to cast ballots in the primary run-off election this Tuesday, June 16.

Early voting has been underway since June 8 and will continue through Friday, June 12 at the Board of Elections, 312 Nichols Street, Blackshear.

Turnout has been low. A total of 3,737 of the county’s 13,079 registered voters participated in the May 19 primary. Of those, about 3,400 chose the Republican ballot and 330 chose the Democratic ballot.

Polls June 16 will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. at the Pierce County Gym on College Avenue in Blackshear and Eagle Station on Williams Street in Patterson. Voters can check their polling place at mvp.sos.ga.gov.

Voters are reminded to bring a physical photo identification. Cell phone photos taken of the identification will not be acceptable.

Six Republican and five Democratic nominees will be determined in the run-off election after candidates in those races did not receive 50 percent plus one of the vote.

Republican run-offs include: Mike Collins and Derek Dooley for U.S. Senate. The winner will face Democratic incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff in November.

• Rick Jackson and Burt Jones for Governor. The winner will face Democratic nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms in the general election.

John F. Kennedy and Greg Dolezal for lieutenant governor. The winner will face either Josh McLaurin or Nabilah Parkes in November. McLaurin and Parkes are also in a run-off on the Democratic ticket.

Tim Fleming and Vernon Jones for secretary of state. The winner will face either Penny Brown Reynolds or Dana Barrett. Reynolds and Barrett are in a run-off for the Democratic nomination.

Incumbent Richard Woods and Fred “Bubba” Longgrear for state school superintendent. The winner will face Democrat Lydia Powell in November.

Josh Tolbert and Bobby Mehan for public service commissioner district 5. The winner will face Democrat Sheila Edwards in November.

Democratic run-offs include: • Joyce Marie Griggs and Amanda Hollowell for U.S. House of Representatives District 1. The winner will face Republican Jim Kingston in November.

Josh McLaurin and Nabilah Parkes for lieutenant governor. The winner will face either John F. Kennedy or Greg Dolezal in November. Kennedy and Dolezal are also in a run-off for the Republican nomination.

Penny Brown Reynolds and Dana Barrett for secretary of state. The winner will face either Tim Fleming or Vernon Jones who are also in a run-off on the Republican ticket.

Keisha Sean Waites and DeAndre Mathis for insurance commissioner. The winner will face Republican incumbent John King in the fall.

Nikki Porcher and Michelle Michi Sanchez for labor commissioner.

The winner will face Republican incumbent Barbara Rivera Holmes. Holmes is running fora term in her own right. She is currently serving the unexpired term of Bruce Thompson, who died in office in 2024.

Those who voted in either party’s primary are restricted to that party’s runoff. Voters cannot change parties for the run-off election.

Those who are registered, but did not vote in the May 19 primary, can participate, but will have to choose which party. Similarly, those who pulled a nonpartisan ballot in the primary, are eligible to participate in either party’s primary runoff.
