More than 200 descendants and family members gathered Saturday, May 30, for the first ever Merchant Family Reunion.

The historic event was dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of Peter Merchant, an ancestor who was enslaved in Pierce County around 1845 and later left for new opportunities following emancipation..

The reunion marked a significant milestone for the Merchant family as relatives from across the country came together to celebrate their shared heritage, reconnect with one another and recognize the perseverance and resilience passed down through several generations.

A highlight of the reunion was a presentation by Carolyn Deloach of the Charlton County Historical Society, who shared valuable historical research detailing Peter Merchant's life after emancipation. Deloach’s presentation provided attendees with a deeper understanding of their ancestor's journey, accomplishments and contributions following slavery, helping bring an important chapter of family history to life.

Family members were also moved by the powerful storytelling of Rose Bailey, who offered key information about the family's history and experiences. Through her heartfelt reflections and vivid storytelling, attendees gained a greater appreciation for the struggles, triumphs and enduring strength of their ancestors.

More than just a family gathering, the reunion served as a celebration of heritage, resilience and unity. Throughout the day, relatives shared memories, explored family connections and reflected on the legacy of Peter Merchant and the generations that followed him. “Today was all about learning and loving each other. I am so grateful to be a part of it,” Belinda Overstreet- Fletcher remarked. 'This reunion has given us an opportunity to honor Peter Merchant's legacy and ensure that his story continues to be told.”

The organizer expressed gratitude for the overwhelming turnout and support from family members who helped make the event a success. The gathering highlighted the importance of preserving family history and passing it on to future generations. Attendees left the inaugural Merchant Family Reunion with a renewed sense of pride, connection and purpose. Not only was Peter Merchant's life and legacy honored, but a foundation was laid for a tradition which will continue to unite and inspire the Merchant family for years to come.
