BLACKSHEAR — Charles Edward Brooks, 86, of Blackshear died Sunday, June 7, 2026, at his residence after an extended illness.

Brooks was born in Blackshear to the late Horace H. and Est elle Francis Wilson Brooks, and lived in Blackshear all his life. He was a graduate of Blackshear High School and retired from Ware State Prison as a Correctional Officer.

Brooks was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Georgia Hunting and Fishing Federation, and the Pierce County Fox Hunting Club.

Along with his parents, Brooks was also preceded in death by his wife, Sherley Ann Higgs Brooks; one son, Charles “Chuck” Brooks, Jr.; nine brothers, Hugh Brooks, Curtis Brooks, Milton E. Brooks, Bill Brooks, Roy Brooks, Rossi Brooks, Bobby Brooks, J.H. Brooks, Gene Brooks and Carl Brooks; and four sisters, Jeannette Gardiner, Nina Joyce Gillette, Gladys Couch and Mary Lou Sapp.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Brooks (Melinda) of Hoboken and Nathan Brooks (Gay) of Blackshear; six grandchildren, Trey Brooks (KC) of Blackshear, Casey Brooks (Lindsey) of Blackshear, Sherry Brooks of Blackshear, Quinton Brooks of Waycross, Brittney Brooks Wells (Matt) of Waycross, and Rachael Brooks of Blackshear; 13 great grandchildren; one brother, Jackie Brooks of Blackshear; one sister, Silvia Nell Fontaine (Bernard) of Blairsville, Ga.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, June 10) at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Ben James Cemetery.

The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
