DOT says Satilla River Bridge project ahead of schedule

Work is progressing a bit ahead of schedule on the Satilla River Bridge on U.S. Highway 84 at the Pierce-Ware County line.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) recently gave an update on the project.

DOT Communications director Jill Nagel said the project is on budget and a little ahead of schedule. The $44.9 million replacement project’s completion date is officially August 31, 2027.

Work began on the span about 27 months ago.

The first new span was completed last September and replacement of the original span is now underway. Construction crews currently are pouring the columns and working on the deck for the new bridge.

The original bridge was first constructed in 1923, but the span was overhauled and widened in 1982 when U.S. 84 was increased to four lanes — two in each direction.
