Nahunta City Council hears complaints on ‘The Local’

NAHUNTA — Two residents spoke on a series of issues at a restaurant and took their case before the City Council during Monday night’s monthly meeting.

Melissa Henderson, a resident of Avalon Street, made a series of statements regarding The Local, a restaurant in Nahunta, and brought up a series of activities that have been taking place there for the past eight months at the June 1 meeting.

According to Henderson, some of the activities range from loud music past normal noise ordinance hours, fighting and motorcycles performing donuts.

“We are losing a good neighborhood,” Henderson said. “W’'ve never had any problems before until the last eight months.”

Rev. Tim Rowell of King Memorial Church corroborated Henderson’s concerns. Rowell stated he stands with his neighbors on asking the council to find a solution.

“Nothing good comes out of a bar,” Rev. Rowell said. “Most of the fights take place in the street outside the bar, which is we're trying to live.”

Another point stated was The Local is supposed to be a restaurant and not a bar. They do not have license for liquor, but they do have one for beer and wine.

Henderson further elaborated she has video footage from The Local to verify her concerns. She has also spoken to the Chief of Police (Brad Todd) to make sure there are no noise violations past 10 p.m.

She also spoke on behalf of a few neighbors asking the council for help in this matter. The council stated it will make efforts to finding a solution.

Other agenda items discussed/voted on included: The council approved a proposal from Jericho Architectural Firm to move forward for plans for a new City Hall.

According to the council, there are some preliminary plans at the moment for the new City Hall, but there will be modifications going forward. One of the modifications is to make two rooms into a fireproof vault.

For the Nahunta Police Department, Chief Todd gave the monthly report for May.

There were 462 E911 calls; 229 traffic stops; 61 citations issued; 168 warnings issued; nine incident reports filed and nine accident reports filed; and six arrests were made.

Jeremy Ryan gave the Public Works Report. Ryan stated there were 347 work orders for the month of May. There was no new report from City Clerk Angie Wirth or Mayor Marty Lee.

The next Nahunta City Council meeting will be on Monday, July 6 at 6 p.m., inside Nahunta City Hall.
