The Pierce County Food Pantry may be getting a new building.
The Pierce County Commission will apply for a community development block grant (CDBG) for a new food pantry.
A request for proposals advertisement for the project is included in this week’s edition.
The advertisement is seeking an architectural firm to do the planning, designs, contracting, construction oversight, quality control and other services on the building, dependent on the county receiving the grant.
Plans call for the facility to be constructed on property the county already owns on Grady Street at the site of the old Grady Street School.
“This is something we’ve needed for a long time,” said County Chairman Neal Bennett. “We have been planning for this facility and hopefully the grant will be awarded.”
The Food Pantry is currently housed in the Pierce County Senior Center on Carter Avenue in Blackshear. However, the food pantry frequently lacks adequate space for food storage and food distribution.
Bennett said the county is trying to address those needs in the short term, but said a new building would provide a permanent solution.
CDBG grants are generally awarded in the fall by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
