HORTENSE — A Brantley County deputy and a Hortense woman escaped without injuries in a two-vehicle accident early Monday morning in zero visibility.
Jack Whisenant, 50, was driving an unmarked 2025 Chevrolet 1500 Brantley County Sheriff's Department vehicle on Ga. Hwy. 32 May 18. Whisenant had stopped on the south shoulder with emergency lights and blue lights flashing due to heavy smoke from a recent wildfire, according to the report of Georgia State Patrol Sergeant First Class Miles Cooper.
Whisenant was attempting to warn eastbound traffic of the zero visibility due to heavy smoke and crashes already reported ahead.
The deputy made a U-turn in an attempt to reposition his vehicle to better warn the motorist at a nearby intersection.
During this maneuver, Whisenant was struck on the driver’s side near the area of the front by an eastbound 2006 GMC Sierra driven by Carolyn Hackard, 73, of Hortense at approximately 7:30 a.m.
Neither driver required medical treatment.
