Johns arrested on drug charges after traffic stop

NAHUNTA — A 39-year-old Nahunta man was arrested on three drug charges, two moving violations and an outstanding probation violation warrant following a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon.

Robert Curtis Johns was transported to the Brantley County Jail May 20 for booking and placed on hold pending warrants. He was charged with Possession of Drug Related Objects, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Fentanyl, Driving While License Suspended and Hands Free Law Violation. “Fentanyl continues to be one of the most dangerous drugs affecting communities across our nation,” said Nahunta Police Chief Brad Todd, who made the traffic stop. “Our officers will continue working proactively to remove these dangerous substances from our streets while maintaining strong partnerships with neighboring agencies and the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office. Public safety remains our top priority.”

Chief Todd conducted the traffic stop at approximately 1:42 p.m., on a gold Ford F-350 on Avalon Street at Georgia Highway 520 for a traffic violation.

Once the vehicle came to a stop, the driver, identified as Johns, moved from the driver’s seat into the passenger seat. At the same time, the passenger, identified as 20-year-old Robert Baylee Johns of Nahunta moved into the driver’s seat in an apparent attempt to make it appear as though he had been operating the vehicle.

The police chief quickly removed both subjects from the vehicle and placed them into handcuffs while securing the scene. During the incident, Chief Todd advised dispatch he had two individuals detained.

Deputies with the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office responded promptly to assist. During the investigation, Robert Curtis Johns was found to be in possession of a quantity of suspected fentanyl and methamphetamine. He was also discovered to have an outstanding probation violation warrant.

At the conclusion of the traffic stop, Robert Baylee Johns was released at the scene. The vehicle was turned over to another family member.

The Nahunta Police Department appreciates the professionalism, teamwork, and rapid response provided by the sheriff’s office deputies during the incident. Their assistance helped ensure the stop was handled safely and efficiently.
