Wildfire breaks out in western Pierce County

A wildfire broke out near Big House Road in the west-central portion of Pierce County Monday as The Times was going to press.

The fire was centered around the Big House, Guest and Little Hurricane Creek Road areas.

County Fire Chief Chris Todd said units from the Pierce County Volunteer Fire Department as well as Bacon and Ware Counties and Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) turned out to battle the blaze. GFC had fire crews, four dozers, a helicopter and an airplane on scene.

Todd said Monday evening Georgia Forestry had established containment lines around the fire, but stopped short of saying the blaze was under control.

As of press time, there is no immediate cause for alarm, but area residents are asked to remain vigilant and be cautious with outdoor burning due to the extremely dry conditions which have persisted in spite of recent rainfall.

The wildfire reportedly started from a control burn where land was being cleared for blueberry trees in the area.

A large smoke plume rises from a wildfire off Big House Road Monday afternoon which drew a rapid response from Pierce, Ware and Bacon Co.
