City issues statement on project to update Blackshear City Park and Veterans Memorial

Long-awaited improvements to Blackshear City Park are about to get underway.

The city has published a public notice in recent weeks, advertising some parts of the park will also be closed or off-limits during the approximately 12 month long project.

Planned improvements include the construction of new pickleball courts, installation of updated playground equipment for kids, development of a large, open-air shelter, creation of a walking path, replacement of existing landscaping and the addition of a newly updated Veterans Memorial to honor local men and women who have served our country. Understanding that the veterans memorial in the park is a sensitive issue close to the hearts of many residents, the city has included an additional public statement regarding the temporary removal, reconditioning and reinstallation o f the existing veterans memorials. The city’s official

statment reads: “As part of the City Park Renovation Project, the existing veterans memorials will be temporarily removed for professional cleaning, repair, reconditioning, and bronze restoration.”

“The City of Blackshear is committed to treating these memorials with the utmost respect and care. Each memorial will be carefully preserved and securely stored during construction, and all will be reinstalled in the City Park as part of the new Veterans Memorial upon completion of the project.

We appreciate the community’s understanding as we work to enhance and honor these important tributes for future generations.”
