‘State of City’ view May 15 at noon Mayor Michael-Angelo James presents his annual “State of the City” address at noon, Friday, May 15 at C.C. McCray City Auditorium, 865 Pendleton Street.

Theme for this year’s address is “Expansion – A City on the Rise.” The address will highlight key milestones from the past year, while outlining bold priorities that will drive continued expansion in economic development, infrastructure, and community well-being.

This edition of Mayor James’ view of the city will be his next-to-last in the office. His second term expires Dec. 31, 2027.

Ware BOE talks budget on May 21 The Ware County Board of Education will hold a called meeting at 5 p.m., Thursday, May 21 at the board offices, 1301 Bailey Street.

Members will discuss and vote on adopting the proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2026-27 at the public meeting. Personnel and other miscellaneous items also on the agenda.

The meeting agenda is posted prior to the meeting, and the minutes are posted as well on the system web page at www.ware.k12.ga.us under the District and e-Board links.

Griffin-Bell family has reunion May 24 Members of the Griffin and Bell families will hold a reunion Sunday, May 24 at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 2378 Mount Calvary Road, Hoboken.

Lunch will be spread at 12:30 p.m. Attendees should bring a covered dish.

WPD Jr. Academy registration open The Waycross Police Department is taking applications for its summer’s Junior Police Academy.

The program will be 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, June 8-12. The program is free for youths ages 8-13, with lunch provided daily.

Applications are available in the front lobby of the police department, 512 Oak Street. Deadline to register is May 31.

The program attracted nearly 90 participants last year. The academy is designed to teach participants about police work while having fun.

The program ends with a “graduation” for all participants and family followed by a cookout.

MSH holds forum on stopping bleeds

Memorial Satilla Health will offer a Stop the Bleed training seminar at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 21, at the Hospital Annex, 1800 Alice Street, in recognition of National Stop the Bleed Month.

The training will help equip community members with the skills needed to respond in a bleeding emergency and potentially save a life. Instruction will help participants learn how to recognize lifethreatening bleeding and act before first responders arrive.

Unison groups meet May 16

Unison Behavioral Health holds two meetings Saturday, May 16 at 201 Arnold Road, St. Simons Island.

Elections board meets May 19

The Ware County Board of Electrions and Registration begins its Election Day meeting at 7:30 a.m. at the board office, 408 Tebeau Street, before a recess until 6 p.m. to close out the voting day.

Certification of the General Primary vote will be at 5 p.m., be Friday, May 22 at the board office.

SE Cancer Walk now set May 29

The Southeast Cancer Walk has been rescheduled after organizers decided postponed the event due to the ongoing wildfire in nearby Brantley County.

Originally scheduled for Friday, April 24, the event now will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, May 29 at the Tiger Field track.

Plans for the rescheduled event remain the same.

Youth fishing derby in Folkston June 6 Friends of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge holds its 7th annual Youth Fishing Derby from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2026 at Folkston Elementary School Lake, 285 Little Phoebe Road.

The event is free and participants must provide their own fishing pole, stringer, and bait. Registration is at 8 a.m. with fishing to start at 8:30.

Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers for ages 3-6, 7-11, 12-15, and 16-18 for the most fish caught, in addition to one overall winner for the largest fish caught.
