Letter to the editor

No need for perimeter road

To the editor:

This letter addresses what I have learned from the discussion of the perimeter road that was originally planned to encompass Ware, Brantley and Pierce counties.

I attended a meeting at the city auditorium a couple of weeks ago and learned that major changes have been made since the original plans, which DO NOT include Brantley or Pierce County, and it limits the Waycross perimeter to the southside of Waycross only. The company that did the perimeter survey, which the county paid for, discussed the changes and realized the original is no longer feasible.

Could it be because Brantley and Pierce County have made it clear that they don’t want a bypass through their counties? Could it be that now they realize the cost is too high? Could it be that they know the plan won’t work at all to help the main traffic problems?

The new plan is to only have the perimeter on the southside of Waycross. Why would we want a bypass around only the southside?

We have four-lane roads on both the Jacksonville Highway and Brunswick Highway that are both connected to Corridor Z (South Georgia Parkway), and all of these take traffic away from the city.

As one man put it in the meeting, “Why do we need a bypass around a bypass?”

Brunswick and Jacksonville highways don’t have the issue with traffic flow. We all know the bottle neck occurs on Plant Avenue when the trains come to a complete stop and traffic backs up several hours, multiple times a day.

Are the citizens of Waycross willing to spend their taxes on a “perimeter road” that isn’t going to help the traffic problems? No!

You shouldn’t be throwing money on something that our commissioners are telling us will help with the flow of traffic when the problem isn’t on the southside, it’s on Plant Avenue!

There will be a question on the ballot May 19 asking if you feel we need a perimeter road. The plan has changed so much that I would encourage you to vote no!

This plan is taking homes and land from hardworking people, not to mention the businesses/ jobs that will suffer by diverting traffic away from them.

Please vote no when you go to the polls on May 19. Save our homes, our land, our businesses, and our jobs.
