No Lucas appeal on candidacy decision

Residents in District 3 will have a new representative on the Ware County Commission in 2027.

Republican incumbent Timmy Lucas forwent the opportunity to appeal the decision by the Ware County Board of Elections and Registration to disqualify his candidacy for the seat.

The decision came after a hearing April 16 on his eligibility when the $144 check for his registration fee failed to clear his bank.

Lucas had 10 days to file an appeal in Ware County Superior Court contesting the disqualification. Election Supervisor Carlos Nelson said last week the board of elections received no notice of an appeal from the court by the deadline.

That leaves Jonathan Daniell and Raylan Guy to vie for the seat. Since no Democrat filed for the post, the winner in the General Primary May 19 will replace Lucas.

Lucas will remain on the ballot because it already was printed when the situation with his candidacy arose.Any votes he receives, however, won’t be counted, Nelson said, because he’s not a qualified candidate.

Early voting for the primary continues through May 15 at the board of elections office, 408 Tebeau Street. Weekday hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 9 a.m to 4 p.m. on the remaining Saturday during the period.

Voting began April 27, and 533 citizens cast a ballot through the close of the first week May 2, Nelson said. Of those votes, 505 were in person, with the others by absentee.

May 1 had the highest voting activity with 98 in person and 19 absentee ballots received, Nelson said.

The commission race is one of only two local ones on the ballot that are contested. The other is in District 5 on the Ware County Board of Education, where incumbent Brandi Waters faces former District 6 representative Dee Meadows.

A host of national and state races also await voters.
