City man arrested in Coffee on stalking probation violation

A Waycross man was arrested last week in Coffee County for violating probation he received for a 2019 Aggravated Stalking conviction.

James Michael Shelton, 32, of Waycross, was arrested April 28 by Coffee County Sheriff’s Office personnel in the county. His arrest came after CCSO received an anonymous tip on its mobile app, officials said.

Shelton remains in the Coffee County Jail pending further legal action, authorities said.

He was previously charged and convicted of Aggravated Stalking in 2019 and sentenced under First Offender status to 5 years of probation. That same year, Shelton violated the conditions of his probation, resulting in the revocation of his First Offender status and adjudication as a convicted felon.

He was subsequently resentenced to a total of 10 years of probation in the case.

As a condition of his probation, Shelton was prohibited from entering Coffee and Atkinson counties for the duration of his probationary period.

The court also advised any additional violations could result in full revocation of probation and imposition of his remaining time in confinement.

Last December, CCSO received multiple tips indicating Shelton had returned to Coffee County. Through continued community cooperation, agents with the Drug Interdiction & Criminal Enforcement Unit (D.I.C.E.) were able to locate Shelton at a residence along Highway 441. A warrant was obtained, and Shelton was taken into custody without incident.

Sheriff Fred Cole extended sincere appreciation to the citizens who came forward with information. He said their willingness to speak up plays a critical role in protecting this community.

“This is exactly how law enforcement and the community work together to keep dangerous individuals off our streets,” Cole said.
