WCHS beats Cartersville to advance; Gators fall

Ware County’s Lady Gators tennis team secured a spot in the Class 4A “Elite 8” for the third time in school history following a 3-0 home victory over Cartersville Tuesday afternoon.

The Region 1 champion Lady Gators will host Region 6 runner-up Cambridge in the quarterfinals. The Lady Bears have posted consecutive 3-0 victories over Region 2 third-seed Hampton and Region 3 champion Starrs Mill.

Ware County, trying to secure its first “Final Four” bid, last made a trip to the quarterfinals in 2023 ending with a loss to Chattahoochee. The Lady Gators also fell in the 2009 quarters to Lakeside-Evans.

Region 1-AAAA Player of the Year Bailey Denton rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles. Paislee Wildes followed with a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 3. Elly Blackrick was up one set at No. 2 when the match was pulled.

Kayleigh LeMay and Gracie Vickers posted the winning point with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Ella Beth Cox and Addie Bishop were up a set at No. 2 doubles when play was halted.

The Gators had their season end with a second round 3-1 loss at Cedartown.

Ashton Stormant and Eli Cook recorded Ware County’s lone with victory posting a 6-0, 6-2 decision in doubles action.
