WAYCROSS — Brantley County’s Class A DI defending champion Herons advanced to the “Elite 8” with a 3-0 victory over Bremen here Monday at Ware County High School.
The tournament’s No. 1 seed Herons (21-2) improved to 15-4 in the second round stretching their streak of reaching the quarterfinals to 10 consecutive years (2016-26; 2021 Spring sports cancelled).
Brantley County hosted eighthseed Bleckley County, which advanced with victories over 25th-seed Lamar County and ninth-seed Social Circle, Monday, May 4.
The Herons entered 10-4 in the quarterfinals with four consecutive wins.
BCHS, 45-18 in the post-season, swept the doubles matches and won at No. 3 singles to beat the 17th-seed Blue Devils.
The match was moved to Ware County High School because of the smoke associated with the Hwy. 82 fire in the eastern part of Brantley County.
Miles and Jett Florey notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles over Hayes Andrews and Charles Griffin. Evan Payne and Alex Keen teamed up at No. 2 for a 6-1, 6-0 win over Grayson Mills and Eli Wheeler.
Jayce Chapman notched the lone victory in singles action down Miles Zimmerman 6-0, 6-2. Matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles were pulled with BCHS’s third victory.
At No. 1, Ashton Tyler was down a set to Jack Morin 0-6 and leading 4-3 in the second. Owen Spradley was up one set 6-0 and tied at 4-all in the second set.
