101 cast Ware ballots to start primary voting

Early voting has started for the General Primary May 19, and will continue weekdays and Saturday through May 15.

Voting began Monday, April 27 at the Ware County Board of Elections and Registration, 408 Tebeau Street. Elections Supervisor Carlos Nelson said 101 people — 88 in person and 13 by absentee — cast a ballot during the first day.

Weekday hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 9 a.m to 4 p.m. on the Saturdays in the period.

Voting May 19 will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at county locations. Residents needed to be registered by April 20 to cast a primary ballot.

There are no City of Waycross races on the ballot, and only two for Ware County that are contested after qualifying last month. Those two are for District 3 on the County Commission and District 5 on the Board of Education.

Three people filed for the commission seat — incumbent Timmy Lucas along with Jonathan Daniell and Raylan Guy. All are Republicans.

The candidacy of Lucas is in question after the board of elections disqualified him following a hearing April 16 when the $144 check for his registration fee failed to clear his bank.

Lucas had 10 days to file an appeal with Ware Superior Court contesting the disqualification.

Nelson said Monday, the elections office had received no notice of an appeal from the court.

Lucas appears on the ballot, but no votes for him will be counted unless the ruling is overturned by the court.

The contested school board seat is between incumbent Brandi Waters and former board member Dee Meadows.

There also are a host of state and congressional races on the ballot, as well as “straw poll” questions placed by the Republican and Democrat parties.
