Gators linksters fall short in bid for state berth

WARNER ROBINS — Ware County’s Gator golf team came up short in qualifying for the Class 4A tournament after finishing fifth here Monday at the nine-team Area 1-AAAA golf tournament held at Southern Landings Golf Club.

Benedictine posted a five-over-par team score of 293 to win by three shots over Marist. Both schools advanced to the twoday state finals being staged Monday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 19 at Savannah Golf Club in Savannah.

Perry (306) and St. Pius X (307) finished third and fourth respectively to qualify for the sectional at Georgia National Golf Club in McDonough.

Ware County finished 23 shots behind the Golden Lions. The Gators were followed by Northview (339), Wayne County (352), Druid Hills (356) and North Springs (381).

BC’s four-man team score consisted of 71-73-74-75. Marist turned in scores of 7374-74-75. All six team members for each squad recorded scores of 78 or better.

Perry posted scores of 73-73-77-83 while St. Pius X shot 74-75-77-81.

The Cadets’ Bear Dollander and Asher Dean tied for medalist honors with oneunder- par scores of 71. Dollander shot 3536 with three birdies on each side. Dean posted rounds of 37-34 with four birdies including three of his last four holes.

Kolby King shot 40-4383 with one birdie. Brody Martin carded a 40-45-85 with two birdies. Jackson Ray and Will Peters (birdie) recorded rounds of 48-43-91. Lucas Tuten shot 49-43-92.

Gators 6th at 11-team Blue Devil Classic STATESBORO — Ware County placed fifth here Saturday at the 11-team Blue Devil Classic hosted by Statesboro High at Georgia Southern University Golf Course.

Class A Private Aquinas captured the title in a playoff with Class 6A Grovetown after the two teams finished tied at 314. Benedictine “B” (322) was third. The Cadets were followed by Class 6A Etowah (331), Class 5A South Effingham (336), Ware County (337), Class 3A Southeast Bulloch (340), Class A DII Metter (351), Class 5A host Statesboro (354), Class 5A Effingham County (365) and Statesboro “B” (450).

Andrew Cochran of Aquinas was tournament medalist in the field of 62 linksters with a oneunder-par score of 71.

Dean led the Gators with a round of 77. King was next with an 82. Martin posted an 88 while Ray and Peters carded rounds of 90 and 91 respectively.
