WAYNESBORO — Pierce County qualified for the Class 2A state golf tournament with a third-place finish here Tuesday at the Waynesboro Country Club in the nine-team Area 2 tournament hosted by Burke County.
The Bears shot 320 April 21 to finish behind champion Thomson’s 316 and Burke County’s 319. All three teams advance to the two-day, 36-hole state tournament being hosted by PCHS at Okefenokee Country Club Monday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 19.
Trailing the trio were Crisp County (336), Cook (337), Davidson Fine Arts (385), Appling County (394), Tattnall County (402) and Johnson-Augusta (464).
Laney of Augusta had one golfer with Savannah Arts Academy having three golfers playing as individuals.
Thomson’s Sam Amerson led the field of 54 golfers, recording a two-under-par score of 70, shooting 35-35. He posted four birdies on the front and two on the back. Laney’s Gavin Wood carded a 74 for second.
Each of the top three teams had two sub-80 rounds with the Bulldogs getting a 70 and 79. Burke County posted 75-77 while the Bears shot 76-78.
PCHS was led by the Stricklands—Hardt and Beau. Hardt Strickland shot 36-40-76 with two birdies on each nine. Beau Strickland posted 38-40 with two birdies on the front side.
Bennett Puryear recorded a round of 41-42-83 with a birdie on each side. Justin Smith rounded out the team score, shooting 44-39-83 with a birdie on the front.
Barrett Moore and C.J. Weathersby (birdie on front) shot 43-45-88 and 40-48-88 respectively.
