WAYNESVILLE — Pierce County’s reigning four-time state champion Lady Bears will defend their titles after winning the five-team Area 2AA tournament here at the Waynesboro Country Club Tuesday.
The Lady Bears, who shot 158 with three scores of 79 in the April 21 tourney, will be joined at the twoday, 36-hole state tournament (Monday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 19) at the Okefenokee Country Club by runner-up Burke County (172) and Appling County (187). Davidson Fine Arts (240) and Crisp County (240) tying for fourth.
Savannah Arts Academy was represented by medalist Maya Lilja-Vazquez, who shot a round of 78 that included three birdies to lead the field of 17 golfers.
“I’m super proud of the way we competed,” said head coach Stuart Stipe. “The Area 2-AA championship was a goal, but not the goal. We turned the excuses for a bad day into the reasons why we won.
“Adversity was everywhere, but the girls found their edge and finished strong. This was our best team effort of the year and it came at the right time.
“We will turn our attention to the state championship. We are fortunate to call Okefenokee Country Club home and look forward to hosting some of the best golfers in the state.”
Belle Sinclair, Brooke Dixon and Kadence Hale each posted rounds of 79 for the team score.
Sinclair shot 43-36-79 with three birdies on her last six holes. Dixon posted 40-39-79 with a birdie on the final hole. Hale shot 39-40-79.
Mollie Kate Dixon recorded a 4240 with three birdies.
