NAHUNTA — The start of early voting for May 19 primary election got off to slow start Monday at the Brantley County Elections Office.
Supervisor BettyJo Morgan reported just 24 ballots had been cast by lunch April 27. The three-week early voting period runs through Friday, May 15 at the Brantley County Elections Office, located at 10305 N. Main Street in Nahunta. Voting is from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
There are two Saturday voting dates — May 2 and May 9. Times are also 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
“Sometimes in the local elections, they don’t turn out very well,” said Morgan. “We (election officials) expect them to this time with all the people on the ballot.”
Morgan believes the Hwy. 82 fire may also be a cause of the slow trickle.
“I do think that (fire) kind of stopped it,” she said. “A lot of people have called today to see if we’re open. So I think it’ll pick up as the week goes on.”
Morgan, when asked, said there was some thought of relocating the early voting site to Hoboken.
“Only if we absolutely had to,” she said. “But, I don’t know how that would work. There’s a lot of strict rules about moving early voting. It’s (notification) supposed to be done months to the Secretary of State’s office in advance if you move.
“Obviously, this (fire) wasn’t a concern until now. I don’t know if the state would allow us.”
