NAHUNTA — In the wake of tragedy, the best and worst of human nature is usually put on display.

The best has been in force with countless churches, community organizations, charities and individuals from all over the southeast pouring out support in the form of donations.

There are multiple locations in Brantley County where residents can pick up donations from clothes to non-perishable food and basic toiletries.

The old Brantley Gas building, located at 114 Satilla Avenue in Nahunta, next door to Frye Funeral Home, has become a hub for clothing donations, while H and S Car Carriers, located at 125 Industrial Park Blvd, Nahunta, provides larger non-perishable donations.

“This is where we’re collecting clothing donations and immediate needs for families who are displaced, as well as items for the fire department,” Emerald Heinritz, a volunteer, said of the Brantley Gas location. “We’re hauling off trailers constantly, all day for them.”

The Brantley Gas center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and has seen consistent traffic.

“Families aren’t able to take a lot right now, so they are just getting what they need, and coming back,” Heinritz said. “Some people can’t get out of their road, some people can’t get back home, they’ve been evacuated, they’re running out of underwear, you know, things like that, so they’re coming everyday for their daily needs.”

Some items Heinritz requested for donations included paper goods, as well as energy drinks for firefighters, and dog food for families. They have received an abundance of clothing donations.

“Right now we’re good on clothes,” she said. “If people do bring clothes, we’re asking for new or lightly used clothes.

“Brantley County and the community has come together amazingly, and it’s just a really great small community.”
