Pierce County Volunteer Firemen and Georgia Forestry Fire Crews were battling a wildfire near the Satilla River off Georgia Highway 121 near the Pierce-Brantley County line as the The Times went to press this week.

“We have an active fire between the Georgia Highway 121 boat ramp at the Satilla River Bridge and the Old Hoboken Road area,” said Sheriff Ramsey Bennett.

No evacuation orders have been issued as most of the fire is located in woodlands close to the river. However, the sheriff asks residents to please avoid the area.

“We have fire crews and heavy equipment in the area and I urge everyone to please give them plenty of room to work to get the fire contained.”

No information is available on how the fire started or how many acres are involved.

Pierce County is currently under a red flag warning for high fire danger. Residents are asked to avoid outdoor burning.
