Times are troubled but there is a God in heaven

We live in a world full of uncertainty. News headlines change by the hour. Economies rise and fall. Governments shift. Families face burdens. Hearts carry fears that are often hidden from everyone else. In times like these, it is a comfort to come back to the words of Daniel 2:28: “But there is a God in heaven.”

Those words were spoken in a moment of great pressure. King Nebuchadnezzar had dreamed a troubling dream and demanded that the wise men of Babylon tell him both the dream and its interpretation. It was an impossible request. The magicians, astrologers and soothsayers had no answer. Their titles, learning and reputation could not help them when the crisis became real.

That is still true today. This world has many voices, but very few real answers. Education has value, but it cannot heal a guilty conscience. Money has usefulness, but it cannot buy peace. Government has a role, but it cannot fix the human heart. When life becomes heavy and eternity becomes real, man quickly discovers his limits.

Yet in the middle of that impossible situation, Daniel gave one of the greatest declarations in all the Bible: “But there is a God in Heaven.”

What a difference that little word “but” makes. Man may fail, but there is a God in heaven. The future may seem dark, but there is a God in heaven. Your heart may be burdened, but there is a God in heaven. We may not know what tomorrow holds, but there is a God in Heaven.

That truth reminds us first that God’s presence is certain. Daniel did not say there was a God in heaven once upon a time, or that there might be a God in heaven. He said, “there is a God in heaven.” He is living, present, and unchanged. Psalm 115:3 says, “But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.” While everything around us seems to change, God does not. Malachi 3:6 says, “For I am the Lord, I change not.” That means our hope is not rooted in circumstances, but in the unchanging character of God.

We also see that God’s power is complete. Daniel testified that God “revealeth secrets.” In other words, God knows what men do not know. He sees what we cannot see. He understands what we cannot understand. Isaiah 46:10 says that He is the One “ Declaring the end from the beginning.” We are often confused by the present because we only see one piece of the picture. God sees it all. He is never surprised, never uncertain, and never at a loss. What is impossible with man is never difficult for God.

That is not only true in the troubles of life, but also in the matter of salvation. No sinner can save himself. No church, ritual or good work can wash away sin. But God, in His mercy, made provision for us through His Son, Jesus Christ. The God of Heaven saw our lost condition and sent Jesus into the world to die for our sins and rise again. Because there is a God in heaven, there is hope for the guilty, mercy for the broken and salvation for the lost.

Lastly, God’s provision is comforting. Daniel and his friends were not left helpless. They sought God and God gave wisdom, direction, and deliverance. He still does. James 1:5 says, “ If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.” How many times we carry burdens we were never meant to carry alone. Yet our help still comes from the Lord.

Whatever burden you may be facing today, this truth remains: there is a God in heaven. When your heart is heavy, there is a God in Heaven. When the way forward is unclear, there is a God in heaven. When the world has no answer, there is still a God in Heaven.

That is not a small truth. It is enough to steady the soul.
