Linksters knock off Appling Co. in season finale at Okefenokee

BLACKSHEAR — Pierce County’s golf teams each posted victory over Appling County in dual matches Thursday at Okefenokee Country Club.

The Lady Bears opted for a jayvee match with the Lady Pirates, who brought just two players. PCHS prevailed 105-118.

“Appling was only able to bring two girls, so I made it a jayvee match for us,” said head coach Stuart Stipe. “Every time we get to play Okefenokee Country Club, we are able to easily identify our strengths and weaknesses. Now, we know what we need to work on moving forward.”

Three freshmen teed it up for the Lady Bears with Grayson Harris tying for medalist honors with a round of 51. Morgan Hull followed with a 54. Rhyan Tompkins posted a 56.

Belle Sinclair led the four other players with a round of 41. Mollie Kate Dixon was shot back with a 42. Kadence Hall carded a 46 with Brook Dixon shooting 49.

The Bears were 53 shots better than Appling County in the boys’ match. PCHS shot 163 with the Pirates finishing with a 216.

Bennett Puryear carded a one-over-par nine-hole score of 37 for medalist honors. Conner Dowling followed with a 41. Hardt Strickland was next with a 42 while Justin Smith and Will Higginson each posted rounds of 43. Beau Strickland added a 45.

Barrett Moore, playing outside the top six, shot a round of 38. C.J. Weathersby finished with a 43.

Jake Edenfeld was the lone Appling County linkster to post a sub-50 score shooting 42.
