(The Pierce County Board of Commissioners discussed and/or voted on the following during their regular meeting Tuesday, April 7.)
Gilman and Trudie Roads: Commissioners approved the lowest bidder for the local maintenance improvement grant (LMIG) for Gilman and Trudie Roads for street and drainage improvements.
Dean Still Road rezoning: Commissioners approved rezoning 43.59 acres on Dean Still Road from agriculture/forestry to single family residential. Allen & Griffis Construction requested the change in zoning for single family homes on the tract. The planning commission recommended approval at their meeting March 10. Commissioners held a public hearing on the request prior to their meeting. There was no public comment.
Public comment: Hardy Thornton came before the board to discuss resurfacing and improvements to Trudie Road. Thornton said the road is “way overdue” for improvements. Commissioners informed Thornton that work on the road is slated to begin soon.
County manager report: Interim County Manager Thomas Sauls gave a lengthy, detailed report about his activities during the past month and included extensive statistics from various county departments. Sauls reported rights-of-way mowing would soon begin in the county. He also said theft of road signs had declined after a recent report on the problem in The Times. He also reported the Chapel Drive paving project is nearing completion. Sauls asked those present to pray for rain, as he pointed out dry weather has also caused problems with dirt roads, especially with sand beds at Yellow Bluff and in the Mershon area. Sauls also announced the City of Blackshear would soon be doing its own code inspections and would withdraw from the joint planning commission.
Pledge leader: Grayson Barber of Walkerville Baptist Church led the invocation.
Pledge leader: Offerman Fire Chief Matt Barber led the pledge of allegiance.
Next meeting: The next regular commission meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center in Blackshear.
