New recreation complex: Board Chairman Chris Wright gave an update on the proposed new recreation complex on County Farm Road and the renovations at the Ware Street Park. Planning for the new park and renovations have been at a stand still since last summer. Wright said Carter and Sloop Architects have projected plans for the project will be ready by July and will be advertised for bids sometime after that.
Update on Tiger Field project: Interim County Manager Thomas Sauls gave an update on improvements to Tiger Field. (See related story) Director’s report: Recreation Director Maureen Brown reported that opening day for spring sports was Monday, April 13. A total of 410 children have signed up to play in the spring programs this season. The recreation department collected a total of $19,202.50 in registration fees for the spring sign-up period. Brown also reported the local department will host the district tournament for 8U boys machine pitch and possibly coach pitch slated for June 5-11. She also reported on the department’s track and field event March 21 and the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s district meet this Friday and Saturday in Camden County and the state meet in Madison County May 8-9. Brown announced Crossroads Christian Academy is using Tiger Field as their home field for the 2026 soccer season. She also reported on damage to basketball backboards. Brown announced senior bingo was planned for April 13.
Next meeting: The next monthly meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center (SEGARAC) on College Avenue.
