City of Hoboken highlights

The City of Hoboken council discussed/voted on the following agenda items during its Tuesday, April 7 monthly meeting.

• Approval of April agenda: The council approved the agenda for the April regular council meeting.

• Approval of March minutes: Council members approved the minutes of the previous regular council meeting held in March.

• TIAZ Band 1 Resolution: This T-SPLOST project includes street renovations for a total of $427,000 to be completed in 2027. The council motioned to adopt the resolution.

Hoboken Police Department: The Hoboken Police Department reported 47 calls for service, conducted 126 traffic stops, issued 68 citations and gave 58 verbal warnings in the month of March.

Sergeant Jonathan Chancy also called attention to the community’s failure to stop for school buses last month, with 12 cases recorded.

“We’ve been hitting that pretty hard,” said Chancy. “We’re having a good conversation on the side of the road, letting (offenders) know these kids matter, and nine times out of 10, you’re probably going to get a citation for running the school bus.

“They’ve recently changed that law, as some of you know, to be a high-aggregated misdemeanor. So it’s pretty serious.”

In addition to the police report, Chancy mentioned the department’s successful participation in Brantley County High School’s (BCHS) recent active shooter drill.

“I would say that was probably one of the best shooter drills that I’ve ever been to,” he said. “Being the police lieutenant over at Coastal Pines, we deal with those all the time. We go to those drills in all 13 counties we service, and (BCHS’s event) was probably top-notch.

“The only critique I would have is that we did have a problem with radio communication. Our radios become virtually useless in any school. They do not reach out. I cannot talk to anyone. So we’re going to have to figure that out.”

Mayor Joey Crews prompted Chancy to read a letter from Dot Hickox, thanking the Hoboken Police Department for the work they do.

Chancy expressed appreciation. “That’s our job,” he said. “We don’t need to be thanked to do it.”

Finally, the council gave Chancy special recognition for his recent promotion to Sergeant with the Hoboken Police Department (see related photo).

Hoboken Volunteer Fire Department: The Hoboken Fire Department reported 15 calls for the month of March, including one wreck with injuries, five medical calls, six brush fires, one smoke show investigation and one special detail (participation in BCHS active shooter drill).

Street/Water Departments: A quote of $5,500 was given to the council to remove debris from the ditch on Highway 121 North.

Councilman James Ray made the first motion to accept, followed by a hesitant second from Councilman Timothy King.

The motion carried despite a 4-2 vote, with most council members preferring to preserve funds for current and upcoming community center updates.

Community Center: Mayor Crews said some holes in the walls of the community center will need to be patched, but suggested the council table discussion of the cost for repairs for now.

Office Administration: and Mayor Crews reported on a recent trip to the Capitol.

“It was a good trip. We met a lot of people,” said King. “It was my first time actually ever being at the Capitol. So it was interesting.

“It was a big turnout … it was definitely worth going,” said the mayor. “And I think if we needed any help, they would help us.”
