HORTENSE – Joseph “Joey” Arthur Strickland, 78 of Hortense, passed away Thursday morning, April 2, 2026 at his residence after an extended illness.
Born in Jesup, Strickland’s parents were Ted Strickland and Lottie Allen Strickland. He is also preceded in death by his first wife, Gwen Strickland; and an aunt and uncle, Peggy and Sam McAfee.
Strickland was a computer programmer and a member of Twin Rivers Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and the song leader. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and his life revolved around them. Strickland enjoyed woodworking and camping.
Survivors include his wife, Selena Strickland of Hortense; a son and daughter-in-law, J.B. Strickland (Nikki) of Hortense; a daughter and son-in-law, Joey Lynn Nuenke (Wayne) of Hortense; five grandchildren, Kate Edwards (Zach), Sam Nuenke, Elise Ammons (Jeremy), Carter Strickland and Max Strickland; three greatgrandchildren, Blaine Edwards, Eleanor Hollingsworth and Sam Ammons; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Al Strickland (Jan) of Blairsville and Gary Strickland (Joyce) of Hortense; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sybil Strickland (Elkin) of Hortense and Jill Dyer (David) of Ormond Beach, Fla.; also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
A funeral service was held Saturday, April 4, 2026 at Twin Rivers Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Rowell, Rev. Derwin Griffin and Rev. Rusty Bryan officiating.
Burial followed in Twin Rivers Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Carter Strickland, Max Strickland, Jeremy Ammons, Zach Edwards, Blaine Edwards and Roger Bunch.
Arrangements were with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
