A Florida man led a Georgia State Trooper on a high-speed chase in Pierce and Ware counties Saturday, March 21 until the motorcycle he was riding malfunctioned, the GSP said.
Jonathan Robert Arroyo, 33 of Kissimmee, Fla., was apprehended near mile marker 2 on Ga. 38 in Waycross when his 2005 Suzuki GSX 1300 rolled to a halt near the intersection of McQuaig Street and Plant Avenue.
Arroyo, who was on felony parole for an aggravated assault in Florida, was charged with reckless driving and felony fleeing as a result of the chase, the GSP said.
Arroyo was taken to the Pierce County jail following apprehension, authorities said.
PFC Dallas Harper with the GSP observed a motorcyclist traveling at a high rate of speed near mile marker 2 on Ga. 38 in Pierce County and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
Rather than slowing to a stop, the motorcyclist accelerated and initiated a pursuit west bound from Pierce County into Ware.
A portion of the chase was captured on video and posted on social media by a motorist sitting at the traffic light at the intersection of Midway Church Road and Ga. 38 in Pierce County.
When the light changed, the motorist followed the path of the fleeing motorcycle and Harper into Ware County.
The chase came to a halt when the motorcycle rolled to a stop allowing Harper to apprehend the rider.
Waycross Police Department personnel were alerted by Harper to the chase nearing the city, but arrived on the scene to find Arroyo on the ground and in custody of Harper, WPD Major-Assistant Chief Danny Hampton said.
“(Harper) him off the bike and on the ground in custody when our guys arrived,” Hampton said.
