‘No Kings’ draws 11 dozen-plus

A group of more than 135 gathered last weekend on Memorial Drive in Waycross for the local “No Kings” rally staged by Invisible Satilla.

Organizers said the two-hour event March 28 was an example of Democracy and the rights for freedom of speech and protest. The group gathered to stand up in opposition to what we see as a danger to our form of government, by a president who continues to center power to him, not the people, said DeAnn Komanecky, Indivisible Satilla president.

“Trump is following the exact path of authoritarians around the world and we will not have Kings in this country,” she said.

Komanecky said the event was a sign of hope in what groups like Indivisible Satilla see as a bleak period for the country.

“We had people from every walk of life, those who’ve never protested, and those who have years of protesting experience, veterans from the jungles of Vietnam, the hills of Korea, from modern conflicts, and peacetime service, coming together with one voice using our First Amendment rights,” she said.

Komanecky said she was grateful for all those who helped with the event in both large and small ways.

“Our vice president Gale Burris worked very hard to make this day a success,” she said. “Other big helpers included Kim Harmon, and group secretary and treasurer Debra Strickland. Thanks also go to speakers, the Rev. Fer-Rell Malone and Sam Worthy.

“Most of all we thank those who came in solidarity and joined us in this historic event.”

The Waycross event was one of more than 50 held in Georgia, and one of more than 3,200 nationwide, with more than eight million people participating, its organizers said.

There also were also “No Kings” protests abroad.

Indivisible Satilla meets at 11 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month at the Waycross-Ware County Library, 401 Lee Avenue.
