Southern Forest World cuts ribbon on historic fire tower

Members of the Waycross- Ware County Chamber of Commerce gathered at Southern Forest World Tuesday morning, hosting the ribbon cutting for the opening of the Brasstown Bald fire tower. The tower was erected on Brasstown bald in 1947, before being replaced and dismantled in 1965.

It was initially moved to Southern Forest World in 1980, courtesy of the efforts of the late Sue Clark.

In recent years, preparations were made to open the tower to the public, with grants being written, and Ware County High School students reflooring the structure.

“We appreciate all the people that have helped us get to this point,” said Barry Deas, President of the SFW Board of Trustees. “There’s been a lot of people that have put a lot of hours into it.”

After the ribbon cutting, attendees enjoyed SFW’s membership appreciation barbeque luncheon.

Visitors can climb the tower during open hours for a fee.

For those interested in visiting Southern Forest World, it’s located at 1440 N Augusta Avenue, Waycross, and can be reached at (912) 285-4056.
