State Representative Steven Meeks (R-Screven) has cosponsored legislation in the Georgia House of Representatives to designate cotton as the official fabric of the State of Georgia. Meeks repr esents Pierce County.
Meeks joined Representatives Jaclyn Ford (Alapaha), Robert Dickey (Musella), Angie O’Steen (Ambrose), Al Williams (Midway) and Chas Cannon (Moultrie) in sponsoring the bill.
“I am appreciative of any recognition of cotton’s contributions and importance to our state as a whole and our rural communities – economically and environmentally,” said Georgia Cotton Commission (GCC) Chairman Bart Davis, a Colquitt County cotton producer.
Meeks is a member of the Commission’s Board of Directors and Representative Ford has been a member of cotton industry organizational leadership.
The GCC is a producerfunded organization located in Perry, Georgia. The commission began in 1965. Georgia cotton producers pay an assessment fee enabling the Commission to invest in programs of research, promotion and education on behalf of all cotton producers of Georgia.
