PCHS netters claim Region 3-AA titles with perfect records

BEARVILLE — Pierce County High School’s top-ranked tennis teams captured Region 3-AA tournament titles at home Thursday blanking Crisp County in the region finale.

The Lady Bears rolled to a 50 victory over Crisp County in the finals with the Bears winning by the same score over the Cougars.

Two days earlier, PCHS took down Jeff Davis in a Tuesday, March 24 match. The Lady Bears escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Class A DI Lady Yellow Jackets. The Bears posted a 4-1 victory.

PCHS hosted Brantley County Monday, March 30. The regular season finale is scheduled for April 16 at home against Southeast Bulloch.

Jasmine Sergent’s three-set victory at No. 3 singles protected the Lady Bears unbeaten season in a battle of top-ranked teams.

Sergent was down a set and trailed 5-0 in the second before rallying for a 4-6, 7-6, 10-7 victory over Ryleigh King for the winning point. Marlee Kate Wetherington fell at No. 1 to Cori Mims 6-2, 6-3. Mattie Lee posted a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 2 over Lila Walters.

PCHS’s No. 2 doubles team of Addie Brown and Brooklyn Thomas outlasted Rowan Fisher and Caylin Carter 6-4, 6-4. The No. 1 duo of Eva Horne and Abby Higginson lost a third-set, 10-point tie-breaker in falling 16, 6-2, 10-6 to Kyle Ross and Ava Coleman.

PCHS captured two of the three singles matches and swept the doubles action to beat the Yellow Jacket.

J.C. Nimmer had the lone loss falling in a third-set, 10-point tie-breaker to Daniel Mims 6-4, 0-6, 10-5. Jeb Bradley posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 over Caidon Diaz. Aaden Carlson downed Bentley Poe 6-2, 7-6 (74) at No. 3.

Kellen Roberts and Colby Coates teamed up at No. 1 doubles to beat Kenny Newton and Jacobs Hughes 6-2, 6-3. The No. 2 tandem of Greyson Rodgers and Thomas Lucas notched a 64, 6-1 victory over Asher Mims and Brock Howard.

The Lady Bears dropped just five games in knocking off Crisp County.

Both Lee and Sergent rolled to 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively. Thomas sealed the win with a 61, 6-1 victory at No. 3.

The No. 1 doubles team of Horne and Higginson posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory with the No. 2 tandem of Brown and Rylie Chambless rolling 6-0, 6-1.

The Bears bettered their sister program winning all five matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores in the demolition of Crisp County’s Cougars.

Nimmer, Bradley and Carlson went virtually untested in singles action.

The No. 1 doubles team of Roberts and Coates, along with the No. 2 duo of Rodgers and Lucas also had easy wins.
