Alleged physical abuse while babysitting leads to arrest of local woman

A Blackshear woman has been arrested for alleged physical abuse of children she was babysitting.

April Lynn Smith, 48, was arrested March 15 and charged with two counts of felony cruelty to children first degree, two counts false imprisonment, aggravated battery and cruelty to children in the second degree.

ACE Unit Sgt. Greg Nettles, Investigator Wayne Mercer, Lt. Jacob Winters and Deputies Landry Lloyd and Deputy Holmes conducted an investigation that led to Smith’s arrest.

Sheriff Ramsey Bennett declined to give additional details on the case citing the ongoing investigation.

The sheriff did say, however, his office is committed to protecting Pierce County’s children.

“Anyone who thinks they are going to harm, abuse or otherwise hurt children in this county are notified that we are coming after you and we are going to arrest you and prosecute you,” he said.

Smith is currently being held in the Pierce County Jail.
