Waycross residents will have likely noticed heavy machinery positioned in several locations around town engaging in various projects.
Quarterman and MLK Street will soon see contractors begin construction work on the storm drainage, as well as a sink hole.
The Quarterman project has been planned for several months, and is expected to take 90 days after starting. According to Waycross Public Works Director Matt Elwell, it’s expected to have minimal impact on traffic.
For those passing by the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, the adjacent Voight Field has been busy with tractors and heavy machinery. This is part of another public works project: the construction of a “community green space”, along with a youth football field.
Elwell said the construction is being done in conjunction with reworking the adjacent foot bridge.
The football field will be available for recreation, sub and church league ballgames and practices. Additionally, the city is considering adding a playground at a later date, as well as a community garden, he said.
Grass seeding at Voight is expected to begin this week, with the park and field expected to be open by late summer or early fall.
