POULAND, Ga. — Richard Andrew “Andy” Schmitt, 67 of Poulan, Ga., formerly of Cuthbert, Ga., passed away Sunday, March 15, 2026, in Cuthbert.
Schmitt was born April 3, 1958, in Brunswick, the son of the late Richard Henry “Dick” Schmitt and the late Iris Sawyer Schmitt.
He grew up in Nahunta and attended Brantley County Schools. He loved the outdoors and spent many hours fishing and camping on the Satilla River.
Following high school, Schmitt moved to Cuthbert. He worked for Brunswick Pulp. In September 1982 he met his wife, Paula. They were married March 26, 1983 in Albany.
The couple moved to Worth County in November 1983. Schmitt worked in logging for many years. He began his employment with the Water, Gas and Light Commission in Albany in 1991. Schmitt was a Cathodic Protection supervisor retiring in 2023 with 32 years of service.
Schmitt loved hunting, fishing and working on his property in Cuthbert and was happiest when he was on his tractor plowing and planting deer plots.
Schmitt was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Kathryn West.

Poulan; a son, Scott (Kaitlin) Schmitt of Nahunta; a stepdaughter, Sabrina (Ben) Baldwin of Wolverine Lake, Mich.; two sisters, Sylvia (Bob) McHugh of Milton, Ga., and Marian (Mitch) Smith of Bartow, Ga.; a brother, William Alfred (Sherry) Schmitt of Nahunta; and five grandchildren, Emily, Ashley, Grant, Ayden and Mackenzie; along with several nieces and nephews.
A memorial services will be conducted today (Wednesday, March 25, 2026) at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Lunsford Funeral Home in Cuthbert.
