Herons will be top seed for upcoming region tournament

Brantley County’s Herons clinched the top seed in the upcoming Region 1-A tournament overpowering Bacon County and Fitzgerald to finish unbeaten in region.

The Herons lost one set in three 5-0 victories in a three-day span. BCHS blanked The Red Raiders in Alma Tuesday, March 17. That was followed a day later with a near total blanking of the visiting Purple Hurricane. Brantley County finished the week beating outmatched Wayne County Thursday, March 19.

ALMA — Brantley County captured four of the five matches in straights sets beating the Red Raiders.

Ashton Tyler had the closest match needing a third-set, 10-point tie-breaker at No. 1 singles to beat Caige Durrance 75, 6-7 (2-7), 10-5. Owen Spradley posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 over Austin Giddens. Jayce Chapman downed Lawton Johnson 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3.

Miles and Jeff Florey teamed up at No. 1 doubles to dispose of Hunter Hutto and William Komanecky 6-0, 6-0. The No. 2 tandem of Evan Payne and Yog Patel eased past Dallin Mercer and Ka’Den Baugham 6-2, 6-1.

CANEY BAY — The Herons hardly broke a sweat against visiting Fitzgerald dropping just four games.

Each of the three singles matches ended with identical 6-0, 6-1 scores. Tyler turned back Weston House at No. 1, Chapman downed Ellis Dix at No. 2, and Payne defeated Jesse Tucker at No. 3.

The Floreys blanked Carter Snowden and Turner Reese 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 tandem of Alex Keen and Owen Wildes recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Taylor Reese and Jacolby Grace.

JESUP — BCHS lost just six games, none in doubles action, in beating up the Yellow Jackets.

The closest match came at No. 1 singles with Tyler beating Sam Secorn 6-2, 6-3. Jett Florey knocked off Jackson Thornton 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2. Payne blanked Joshua Llera 6-0, 6-0.

The Herons rolled to 60, 6-0 victories in doubles play. Miles Florey and Patel formed the No. 1 team, beating Kilon Reddish and Peyton Cook. The No. 2 duo of Keen and Wildes beat Keith Buie and Reilly Phelps.
